My ipad connects perfectly well to my wifi router but recently it has started to disconnect from it after an hour or so and connect to my neighbour's, which is not security protected.

Is there any way I can stop this happening? The same thing seems to be happening to my iPhone as well, so I suspect that it's a router issue - I just don't know how to solve it.

You have two issues doing on.

First the easy one. Go into your devices and under wifi find your neighbors network. Tap the blue arrow to get the details and hit 'forget this network'

Second, your router issue. It's very possible that it needs a software update. If its an Apple router you can find check under airport utility on yr Mac (if you have one) or get the free airport utility app on one of yr devices. Should alert you if your software is out of date. If its something else you'll have to research on your own. You can also try just turning off your connection gear and back on. That can sometimes reset things. If you have a airport router and you go into the utility and the Internet is anything but green, rebooting the router is a good step to cure that.

And if you like your neighbor yes you could go for the karma points and mention the lack of a password and how someone nasty could use it to pirate stuff, download kiddie porn etc
