I have always been under the impression that if someone left his/her AirTag in my car for an extended amount of time, my iPhone would alert me, in case the person left there intentionally to track me.(or unintentionally, like forgetting a backpack in my car)

However, I have now confirmed that my iPhone 16PM and iPhone 12 Mini both do NOT alert me to other people's AirTags in my car, even after hours or even days. I discovered this accidentally when my aunt left her purse in the backseat of my car. Then I tested it several more time by asking other friends or family members to leave their AirTags in my car.

Is there some setting in my iPhones that I need to turn on in order to receive such alerts? Or, is it possible that my iPhone knows that those AirTags belong to my friends/family, so it doesn't feel the need to alert me?(all of those people are in my contact list)

How long have you left the AirTag in the car? I think it alerts you if it’s staying with you when you’re going home.

Do you have your home address in your iPhone? I’m not sure if that’s part of it, but I know it works on some algorithm.

Do you have Bluetooth on? It needs Bluetooth for that to work.

Do you have tracking notifications on? Go in the Find My app, click Me at the bottom right corner. Scroll up and you’ll see two links at the bottom for notifications. If you turned off the notifications, then it can’t notify you.

That’s all I could think of off the top of my head
