I updated to iOS 4.2 today on my iPhone 4 and everything was going okay. I was just played a game, exited out, locked and tried to unlock (out of habit), and it won't turn back on. It had at least 40% of battery life left.

And now I've just plugged it into the Mac and it doesn't detect it..

This actually happened to me the other day. After a few hours the battery will die and the phone will be usable again. It just seems like a proximity sensor problem.

You can test this by calling your phone and it will ring as if the phone is on the main screen, and not just dead.

I locked my Iphone 4 last night after the OS 4.2.1 upgrade and like yours it is dead today. I had 80%+ battery last night. Plugged into Macbook Pro - still dead. Plugged into wall outlet - still dead. Held the on button 2 mins - nothing. Tried to phone it from land line - went straight to iPhone voice mail.

Solution

I tried this and it worked:

- started iTunes
- connected iPhone to laptop
- pressed Home button and On/Off button for about 10 seconds until I saw the Apple logo
- it rebooted and sync'd just fine with iTunes

I then tested it by pressing the on/off button to kill the screen, and pressing the on/off button again brought the screen back.

Happy happy, so far.
