Subject matter pretty much says it all. I'm still on a 4.01 JB, never jumped to 4.1. Once an untethered 4.2.1 JB releases, can I just jump right to it, bypassing 4.1?

What he said is make sure you backup your SHSH's with Tinyumbrella for firmware 4.1
You need to hurry up, not sure if Apple is still signing them incase you didnt start saving them earlier.

Huh, was a reading a tutorial on how to use this, but it seems pretty straight forward? I just clicked "Save all SHSHs" and it saved 4.1 and 4.2, even though I'm only on 4.01 like the OP.

When I log into Cydia, it says "SHSH: 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2b3"

I remember having Cydia do something for me back when I JB 4.0.1... had Cydia backup something. Not sure what that was.

Great, you're good then.
Dont go to 4.2.1 yet, wait a bit to see how it plays but from what I heard is that if you have your 4.1 shsh's saved you will have an untethered JB with 4.2.1
Hang tight.

im on 4.0.1 still too
just ran TinyUmbrealla 4.1.14 and saved my SHSHs...didn't know it could save the blobs for firmwares i've never installed on my phone (4.0.2+). never did that before!

Yes, thats the beauty of Tinyumbrella.

Oh, I meant previous versions of TU never saved blobs for newer firmwares (I don't think). I ran TinyUmbrella 4.1.8 earlier this evening and it only saved up to 4.0.1...luckily I ran the newest version!

This is a little off topic, but is there a way to upgrade a jailbroken 4.0.1 Iphone to jailbroken 4.1 while keeping all the apps from Cydia, etc.?

No. Whenever you update, all JB stuff are gone. You will need to re-JB the phone and reinstall all JB apps. You can use pkgbackup to save your JB apps and restore them all at once after re-JBing. It's still better to reinstall apps one by one in case app(s) aren't updated for new firmware and could cause issues.
