My iphone displays numbers rather than the network carrier. Does anyone know why?

I recently went abroad from the uk (I am on Orange) and my bill says I was in countries which I was not (and nowhere near) and to add to that my iphone 4 displayed random numbers instead of the network. Orange are completely stumped they have no idea what the numbers mean. Can anyone help or have any information on why these numbers would be displayed?

Can change to show the signal strength in SBS settings

SBS settings -> More -> System Options then Numeric GSM
