I just restored my iPhone to software 3.1.3 and i switched it on. The unlock slider works fine but when the edit home screen comes up you cant click dismiss. The button is there to click but when you try to press on it it doesnt do anything. Iv try to restore it back to 3.1.2 and 3.1.1 but it still does the same thing. Iv also tried to restart it but again nothing changes. Can anyone help please ??

If reinstalling the software, restarting and turning it off doesn't work, you should go to the Apple store.

My warrenty has run out will they still help me ? Could it be something in the iPhone like the mother board thing ?

Have you tried a hard reset? (hold down home and power button until you see apple logo)

Sounds like the digitizer behind the glass went bad and wont respond to touch any more.
Apple will still help you but charge you a $200 out of warranty fee and give you a replacement.

The digitizer still works because the slide to unlock still works. So say I went in and asked about it could they tell me what's wrong with it without charging me ?

They won't charge you to take a look at it. Most likely they'll just tell you it will be $199 to replace it and that'll be it. If they get detailed enough about what's wrong with it, you can decline the $199 replacement and work on fixing it yourself (order parts from ifixit.com or something) or go to an independent iPhone repair shop for an estimate.

Yeah I think it might be something to do with the motherboard or something.

I finally managed to fix it ! I got a text then opened it and viewed it on the side and i could click on dismiss. Its very strange. Thank you to all who helped.

Respringing it over SSH could possibly fix it.You might possibly be able to get SSH/Veency/SBSettings onto your phone by making a custom IPSW in pwnagetool, in advanced mode you can add packages to the IPSW before creating and then restore. then SSH should be on, respring over there, sorted.

I had the exact same problem as you and was able to fix it. Here's how...

I took the SIM card out of another phone in the house and put it in the phone with the stuck dismiss screen. Once it was recognized I sent it a text message. When it arrived I got the message with the Close or Reply box. Click Reply. The SMS app opens and the Edit Home Screen comes up again....stuck. However, now that you're in SMS, rotate the phone 90 degrees and get into landscape mode. You can now touch dismiss. Ta-da!!

Good luck.
