So my phone just went completely black... It had 88% battery right then, so it's definitely not because of battery. No response trying to turn it on and no response by plugging it into my mac. Never been jailbroken.

Any ideas or suggestions welcome... Is my only option to take it back to an Apple store ? (which is 30 miles away from where I live so I thought I'd check first)

Try holding power and home together for 5 seconds.

My wifes jailbroken 3gs did that 2 or 3 times a week. Restored and left it unjailbroken and hasn't happened since.

There are two other JB 3gs's in the house and they don't have the problem.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

If it happens again, try a full restore and setup as a new phone. If it happens again after that, it's probably crashing due to a hardware issue so you should bring it back.

Same thing here

The same thing happened to me today. It wouldn't turn on and so I held home and sleep button down while it rebooted. I have the Verizon iPhone 4 and it was the first time. Do you have the Verizon iPhone 4 too?

That fixed it thanks! Any idea why this happens though?

I've had it happen once in a while with every iPhone model I've owned. Just happens sometimes.
