Sometimes I put my iPhone 5 on the lower left corner of my Mac (which I think is where the hard drive is located?), and if I slide my iPhone off, it turns off my Mac's display, sometimes requiring me to enter my password to log back in.

Anyone have any idea why this might happen? (It doesn't happen with other objects, I've already tried)

Macbooks have a magnetic switch that tells the computer to sleep when you close the lid. There's a magnet in the lid that triggers it.

Other things can trigger this switch in close proximity if they have magnets in them or generate a magnetic field. It might be the speaker or vibration motor in your iPhone that is triggering the sleep switch.
