My Iphone will not reecognize any sim card!

I have an unlocked 1.1.4 iphone.
It seems to have a problem in recognising sim cards
when i put in any sim card, it says' searching...' as per usual and then all that appears in the top left is '.....' 5 dots. this is the same whichever sim card i put in.
please help!!!:)
