my iphone won't show up on mac desktop, but itunes sees it

I want to take photos off my iphone and put them into a folder in my mac, however, everything I read about how to do this requires that my computer see the iphone on the desktop and it doesn't.....?????

Before it opens iTunes it should open some sort of app to view all of your photos.
