At random times the ipod has a white screen but everything still plays and works and other times it will just work again.

What is causing it to act like this and how can I fix it?

I know this is about a year old, but my 5Gen 30 GB iPod started doing this. It's out of warranty and, who knows...the way Apple has hardware turnover, there may not be any parts for it.

I'm reluctant to buy a new one because this was a Father's Day gift and has an inscription from my sons.

Does anyone know of any tricks I an try? I tried putting it to sleep (with the play button, not "the needle") and reset (menu + center). Every once in a while the screen will return to normal, but that is becoming more rare each day.

Other than the white screen problem, the thing works fine.

I just started having this problem on my iPod too. It sucks, my iPod is basically unusable now and its out of warranty too. I thought apple products lasted long?

Lately, the screen still randomly goes completely white, but adjusting the volume seems to get the screen to come back. I don't remember if I tried that before (I may have only used the menu).

I have no explanations, but for me this seems to be an acceptable work-around. Mine has a lot of sentimental value due to the inscription on the back and getting a replacement (even with the same inscription) wouldn't be the same.
