So after a while of not obtaining new PowerPC Macs, I've found a new PPCMac to add to it, and it's probably the best piece I could have ever added to my collection.

It's a PowerMac G5!

But not just any PowerMac G5...

It's a Late 2005 Quad Core PowerMac G5!
Yes, I finally not only have a PowerMac G5 to compliment my PowerMac G4s, but have the most powerful PowerPC Mac Apple has ever made as well! The Mac that really puts the Power in PowerPC

I found it on Marktplaats when just looking through the Mac section, it was listed as a "Mac Pro G5" for €50, with the description only hinting that it was a 2005 model. The photos only showed the outer case, with no spec sheet shots. So I decided to email the seller if he could give me specifications, and he handed me the serial. Once I checked that serial, it came up as a Quad. I knew I needed to get it! It was an hour away, but that's definitely worth it for the Mac, and fortunately we were already heading that direction for a nice walk in the famous Dutch national park "De Veluwe". So yesterday I finally got there and saw the Mac nicely idling on the Leopard desktop. Gave it a quick look through the system profiler, and it has 10GB of RAM (4x2GB DDR2 PC2-4200U, 2x512MB DDR2 PC2-4200U, and 2x512MB DDR2 ECC PC2-4200E RAM), the stock GeForce 6600 GPU, and the stock 250GB WD Caviar drive.

The seller told me he actually got a bid of €250 that morning via email. The ad had been put on reserved, something that disables bidding on Marktplaats (bidding is not time bound like eBay), basically so that the seller can keep the ad up until the buyer either transfers the money or comes to pick it up, so in the case that the buyer bails, they can just turn off the reservation, and continue the ad. Sadly, some buyers still try and coerce sellers in breaking their promise with the buyer (Marktplaats is basically like Craigslist, where nothing is bound unlike eBay), but fortunately the seller was kind and honest enough to still go through with selling it to me for the promised €50, which I'm grateful for.

So now I have the best PowerPC Mac out there! I'm going to upgrade the HDD to a spare 1TB Toshiba HDD I have, and eventually want to get a better GPU for it, as well as max out the RAM. But I still can't believe that I have gotten my hands on one! Really stoked to see what kind of performance I can squeeze out of this powerhouse :)

Nice find. Did you check the LCS for any signs of leakage? After my Quad G5 started overheating despite showing no signs of leakage, I decided it was best to switch over to my dual-core 2.3 GHz and call it good.

At this point, I have not found any signs of leakage, nor any thermal throttling after GeekBenching it several times consecutively. However, I do plan on doing a complete overhaul of the LCS in the not too distant future, just preemptively so I can keep this Mac going and don't need to worry about LCS failure.

Wow - what a bargain! Is it a quiet one or a noisy one (I've had one of each)? I replaced the 6600 in mine with a Quadro FX 4500 and after testing found it offered zero improvement but added fan noise, not really worth it unless you're playing games.
I think the most amazing thing your Quad can do is play 4K video - that's a real leap for PowerPC.

From my experience, it really isn't that noisy. As for the GPU, I do plan on playing PowerPC Mac supported games on it, so even if I add a bit of noise, a GPU upgrade is still a bit of a must.

Strictly speaking the noisy one I had just meant I could hear it when the CPUs were under stress - the 2nd one was quiet all of the time.

Effortlessly playing 1080P Flash in Youtube was another Quad luxury too...with plenty of cycles to spare.
