Hi: I have a 2 year old MacBook (white). I have been successfully connecting wirelessly via Airport to an older Linksys router Model WRT5GS since I first got my MacBook. I also have an Apple TV for 3 mos. now and it also connected successfully to my router via wifi. Finally, I have a Wii that connects successfully via wifi.
About two weeks ago my MacBook, Apple TV, and Wii stopped connecting to the router. My SSID displays (along with my neighbor's SSID's) when I check Airport for available wifi networks. I've tired using diagnostics but to no avail.
Now here's the kicker. If I disable encryption on my router, I receive a strong signal and can easily connect. If I enable encryption (WEP 128 26 hex-yeah I know it's weak but better than nothing) I show all available SSID's (including my own) but NO signal strength. I cannot connect. I had been using the encryption mentioned all along with no problem.
I tried buying a new Cisco router as I thought maybe the old one might have become defective and got the same exact result ie i can connect all devices with no encryption, I cannot if I encrypt the signal. I tried WPA personal, WEP and nada. I have since returned the new router.
I ran a diagnostic again on my Mac and the sytem network status indicates the following:
Airport: green
Airport Settings: green
Network settings : yellow
ISP: green
Internet: failed
Server: failed
The system instructs me to restart my router, and when I do all of the above turn red. The system asks me for the WEP password but then doesn't connect and keeps asking me for the password.
My PC is currently connected to the router and I have great internet access.
Should I try buying an Airport Express?
Any help would be greatly apprciated! I'm at my wits end!
Thank you!
Hi all-i tried downloading firmware from linksys, then tried WPA encryption and now it works! Go figure...
