My macbook display is too wide for my eyes

I have a 13" macbook and I would like to make the width smaller. One temporary solution would be to resize all windows every time, but I'd go crazy to repeat that each time. I wonder if there are any other tricks that I could do ?

OS X will remember Windows sizes you only have to do it once.

I didnt realise it because some apps have preferences that can override the default.
