I need advice. My macbook hard drive has froze. It makes a slight grinding noise. I was told that I need a new hard drive. I have had one installed but I need my programs that were on my old hard drive. I am a photographer and I have some programs and pics from the old hard drive. Can they be taken off that hard drive if it wont turn?? Thanks

get an enclosure put the drive in the freezer for about an hour then try to pull the data off it repeat as necessary. this works sometimes

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you backup your data? It's difficult, if not impossible, to retrieve your applications and files directly from a failed HDD. There are some companies that recover date from dead HDD, but if it's mechanical failure, it will cost an arm and a leg.

What will putting it in the freezer do? That totally baffles me.

I am not totally sure what putting it in the freezer does. I was told about this by a friend and when i had a drive fail I tried it and was able to get some data off of the drive.
