My 2.26 GHz Macbook pro 13 inch with OSx 10.6.7 won't recognize my headphones! Whenever I plug in my headphones into the audio jack, the sound continues to come out from the Macbook's built-in speakers and no sound comes out from the earbuds. How do I fix this?

You could try option-clicking the volume icon in the menu bar and seeing if headphone jack is an option.

After I plug it in to the audio jack and doing what you said, it just shows me the following:
Use audio port for: Output
Output device: Internal speakers
Input device: Internal microphone

That's all that shows when I option click the sound icon on the bar.

Go to settings > sound > and try resetting to default option. If you have external speakers try and see if sound is outputted
