PS:sorry if this isn't the proper forum catergory for this to be under (its my first post)

So "Computer name:" under System Preferences > Sharing is greyed out?
Can you click "Edit"?

Have you repaired permissions via Disk Utility yet?

My guess...

The preference pane is locked because you are not an admin or because the option is checked to require that all System Preference panes require a password.

Is the padlock in the bottom left corner in the locked position?

so...

i'm attempting to change my name via the sharing part of system preferences

and there is a padlock in the corner but it is unlocked

just hitting edit also does not work because that changes the local network name not the compurter name

Have you tried locking and unlocking?

You can also try this in Terminal:

Code:
sudo scutil --set ComputerName nameofcomputer

yesi have

yes i have tried locking and unlocking restarting the computer everything but it is still like that .... well at least everything simple that i could think of

yeah the only way i can access this panel of system preferences is as an administrator

I'm just brainstorming here so this may be worthless, but...

Do you have any kind of sharing enabled that could be preventing the name change?
