My macbook's screen display is black and it can only be seen if I shine a flashlight through the apple logo (the one that lights up), once I shine it, we can see the actual display and what's supposed to be showing on the screen. How did this happen and how do I fix it? Thank you.

You've got the screen and behind it you've got the backlight which is a sort of lighting panel.
It sounds very much like the backlight is gone I'm afraid. It's textbook.
You have to take it into Apple and get them to check it out.
As I understand it there is an issue with some models and Apple are aware of so if you are lucky and yours is in the list they will fix it free. May be one of the 'flexgate' examples where the ribbon cable gets broken.

"...how do I fix it?"

f this is really what you wanted to know, I'm not allowed to volunteer what you need to get repaired. PM me if you'd like to know your repair options and/or why this happens.

Are you certain that it's not turned down all the way? Try pressing your f2 key a few times and see what happens. MacBooks allow you to turn the backlight off by turning their brightness down to its lowest setting, but it makes the screen near impossible to see. If this does not fix it, then your backlight is most likely dead. What model/year is your MacBook?
