My MBP is telling me to service the battery - Do I have to?

My MBP (14 months old) has come up with the "service battery" message. Its happened once before and gone away... Do I really need to service it? The computer is out of warranty and to be honest I can't be bothered. The battery levels are fine, its still holding enough charge

What have your experiences been with this "service battery" issue?

My battery said "Service" and they replaced it free of charge.
