My MBP won't output hdmi audio to AV receiver (but to tv works fine) !!?!?!

I have a MBP that outputs hdmi audio and video just fine but when I try to do the same to the av receiver, no sound comes out of the speakers

Ive made sure that the hdmi cable and receiver are not at fault because the same connections work with roku just fine.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

The receiver is pioneer vsx-1123

Have you made sure that HDMI audio is selected in the sound settings from System Preferences when connected to the receiver?

It doesn't even show up when I connect to the receiver.

When I connect to tv using hdmi it shows up.

It handles all other hdmi audio input fine.

Updated firmware on the receiver and now it works fine.
Don't understand what the deal was but glad it's gone
