What could be wrong with my Apple optical mouse that came with my G5 computer made back in 2004 (not the Mighty Mouse)?

For example, when I delete an email it will sometimes delete the next email too (in Apple Mail). It just seems to me to be EXTREMELY sensitve. When I just click on a folder on my desktop it will sometimes open it up.

I hate htis because when I am viewing emails in my In Box and deleting the spam ones one by one it will sometimes delete the email right below the one I am deleting too. It just seems to be very sensitive.

It never used to do this and I have never played with my mouse settings.

Please help....

Have you recently changed the surface you're using the mouse on? Also, the mouse might be dirty. These two things are the most common causes of unusual mouse behavior.

the laser could be going bad. Try this, will it move smoothly on a perfect 90-270 line (right-angle to the front-most point of the mouse) and not on the 0-180, or the converse?
