Got my first iMac today. Everything went great. Hooked up my speakers with subwoofer and all is wonderful.

However when I start the iMac the chime sound plays through the imac speakers and not my hooked up speakers. I want to turn off the startup sound if I can so not to wake anyone.

On my previous Mac I just left the speakers off until after I started up avoiding the chime. Any ideas?

Thanks

maybe this is just me, but ive noticed that if i mute the speakers on my MBP before a restart, i do not hear the chime when it reboots.

That is because the startup sound relies on the internal speakers volume and not those of your external ones. A lot of searching and rebooting were needed to get to that conclusion :p
