My father in law brought his MPB 2019 i5 8gb RAM and 128gb SSD to update. I updated to Big Sur, no issues at all...BUT, I did notice something I found interesting -
1) The i5 never used the swap, and memory was never fully utilized, close to 1gb available at all times. The M1, hits the swap almost immediately
2) Load time on the i5 was faster, not significantly faster, but noticeably faster (even compared to the MBP M1 16gb)
3) The i5 got really hot with the fan kicking in pretty often, the M1 never got hot and fan never kicked in
It makes me think the reason for the M1 to get better benchmark reviews has todo on how the chip manages data in memory and swap... It is interesting to me seeing the i5 not hitting the swap at all, and cruising with almost 1gb unused, while the M1 hits the swap with about 100mb or memory unused.... both computers running same tasks...
