Not all drops are the same but this can at least show real world examples.
This can help you increase your odds when buying a case.

1)Phone model
2) Case
3) Estimated height
4) Surface dropped on
5) Estimate how it landed (corner/front flat etc.)
6) Damage/ non damage to phone and case

Here are mine

5S
Spigen Tough Armor
6-foot
Concrete
corner
No damage to phone or case

5
Speck Candy Shell
4-foot
Concrete
corner
No damage to phone and light dent/scratch to case

1) iPhone 5
2) Tech21 D3O Impact with cover
3) 3 feet
4) asphalt
5) flat LCD side down
6) phone perfectly fine. Slight scuffing on the fake leather material on cover

Naked since the very first iPhone, multiple drops to each one, I lay my phone on any surface without losing sleep over it. Nick here and a nick there, I always get great $ when it comes time to sell. I also have applecare+ which means that a new phone is just an apple store away and also adds to the resale value.
