My pound symbol has turned into a #

When I press my pound symbol on my keyboard, I get a hash instead. Any ideas on how to get my pound symbol back? Telling people prices of stuff in $'s is confusing.

I have Snow Leopard, on a Late 2008 Macbook.

Seems I must have done... just changed it back to British. Problem solved. Thanks.
