I'm more of a software guy, and I tend to get lost in hardware. I know some things, but not as much particularly when it comes to Mac.
I'm probably going to make my first Apple purchase. My job enabled me to work in the OSX environment and I see what most people are raving about when it comes to the OS and overall experience.
I've grown up a 17", big-as-it-gets-screen kinda guy. I had the opportunity to take an old Macbook home (13", 1 GB RAM) from work and to work on it for a few days. The 13" wasn't THAT bad. I work on an older iMac at work, and really like it as well. I originally intended to purchase an iMac, but that changed...
We just welcomed our son into the world, so added portability would be a plus. (Him coming also limits my budget, as he's more important than any laptop.) I never intended to purchase a computer at this time, but my Asus Gamer (yes silly for a non-gamer to own, but it was a good computer for graphics) died "early" on me - right at 3 years, usually I can stretch 4-5. So here I am.
I use Photoshop extensively, Dreamweaver, and occasionally some of the other Adobe products for my work. (I design websites, in case you couldn't guess from that.) I now need the ability to edit video using either Final Cut or Premiere for church and maybe business someday. We're talking basic videos right now - nothing motion-graphics intensive or whatnot. Ideally, I will later purchase an iMac to handle the heavy video that I may never even end up doing down the road.
All this rambling leads to my question - would the Air, specifically the 13" new model, handle this load? I can use network storage for space, so I'm thinking the 128GB model to help on the budget. I'm not going to use it for music and so on. I'm putting it up against either a this-generation MBP (13") or 2011 generation MBP (13", possibly 15" with the right deal). I'm still trying to decide on screen resolution, so the 15" would be better but I'm just not sure about it.
If it helps any, I want to go with 8 GB RAM. I've installed RAM on tons of PCs, but if I don't have to open it up, then I'm fine with that so long as I am not paying an arm and a leg like you can sometimes do with Apple for memory.
Thanks for any and all advice! I can't seem to make up my mind!
