My safari is freezing & my activity monitor is spiking

I have a G4 and I'm running Safari version 3.2.1. Lately when I am using Safari I'll be loading pages and it freezes. The activity monitor at that time spikes and I have to force quit to leave Safari. Also, when I am just waiting at the computer, the activity monitor spikes and I am not actually using any processes at the time. Does anyone know what I need to do? Do you need any other information? Could it be malware?
