my screen was dimming over and over today

I have no idea what caused this or if it will come back, but the bottom of the laptop was unusually warm for what I was doing. Thoughts?

It's almost like it's starting to go to sleep but then wakes up just before it does, or something is wonky with the ambient light sensor.

Both things are affected by the SMC, so I would try an SMC reset. If that doesn't work, then bring it in to an Apple Store for free diagnostics.
