Title says it all. Late 09 MacBook Pro. My sound is turned on in OSX. When I reboot my MBP (or shut it off and back on), the startup sound does not chime. How can I get it back?

Check the output device under Sound in the System Prefernces.
Do other sounds play?

Alternately, reset the PRAM (hold Command-Option-P-R on startup until you hear the chime)

other sounds play fine. I just reset the PRAM and it's still not playing the sound, although it did during the PRAM reset process.

any other ideas?

just did an AHT (apple hardware test) and it came back fine. so how can I get my apple chime back???

clean install?

This is rather strange. Maybe try an EFI update? I have never heard of a problem like this before.

Try booting form an external volume with OS X on it, like an SD card or hard drive. See if you get it then.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Okay, got it back. Here's what I did:

1) Make sure volume is up and restart...no dice.
2) Reset PRAM - no dice.
3) Run Apple Hardware Test - passed...no dice.
4) Run Apple Hardware Test (extended) - passed...no dice.
5) Checked About This Mac...Diagnostics...passed...no dice.
6) Installed that startupsound.prefpane application. Upped the sound and that fixed the problem.

Weird.
