had a anybody had this problem? the green icon with Time Machine symbol suddenly isnt showing on my external drive. backups are working fine and Spotlight still quickly indexes it after i mount it but still no icon. any ideas?

ive tried rebooting, repairing permissions and adding another account to see if it shows up but no luck! :(

By green icon do you mean the finder icon for the Time Machine disk.

If so mine has changed to the generic hard drive icon a few times but does go back to the Time Machine icon. Not sure what the reason is but as you say the backups are working - don't worry......

yeh the green Time Machine icon with the clock. im a bit obsessive like than even though its functioning perfectly well :p

In that case - then yes sometimes the green Time Machine icon (under drives in the finder window) does sometimes change back to the ugly generic hard drive icon - but as you say it works as it should. Saying that I have not noticed it showing the wrong item since I installed the 10.5.4 update - there was also a Time Machine update about a month ago so maybe that was the fix ?

^ the icon disappearing in Finder's sidebar has happened to me before. usually jsut relaunching the Finder will do the trick. but the Time Machine icon for my external drive on the desktop and the Finder has completely disappeared.

this has baffled me. i even tried copying the icon from /System/Library/Core Services/CoreTypes.bundle as .VolumeIcon.icns on the drive but that didnt work.

You can get around this.

The next time TM starts backing up and the green icon shows on the desktop, do a cmd-i (Get Info) on it and click on the icon in the window until it shows selected. Copy it.

In the Finder, create a new folder and cmd-i it. Select it in the window and paste. The folder should have the icon now.

When TM stops backing up and changes to the generic icon. Repeat the steps on it and paste the green icon on it. It should now retain thru reboots.
