My touchscreen locks up when holding it in horizontal view

If I hold my iPhone 6 in horizontal mode with both hands, often times the touch screen will completely freeze up (as in touches don't register) until I completely let go to "reset" it for a moment.

The thing is - it only happens with my speck candyshell on. Why would a case cause that?
