Just got back from my try on appointment. It was kind of an odd experience. The employees seemed to be missing a lot of information that seemed important. Neither watch I tried on had any battery power to it so I couldn't test out the taps or turning on and off the screen. The employee seemed confused why none of the watches would turn on and when asking a staff member was told that some were set to run a demo and some did not turn on. He tried to find me one that actually "worked" but none of the ones in his drawer did. Anyways...
I tried a 38mm sport with white band first since this is the model I purchased last night.
I thought the 38mm was the perfect size, though I have small wrists. The aluminum felt nice and was very light. The sport band was extremely comfortable. I was very impressed with the band.
Next I tried on a 42mm SS with Millinese Loop. I wanted to see the size/material difference and I'm also interested in purchasing this band.
I was surprised that the size didn't feel huge and I actually didn't think it was that different from the 38mm. The SS was noticeably heavier, though I preferred the matte finish to the aluminum. Just a personal preference, I'm not a big fan of really shiny things. The band was very comfortable and the magnets seemed very strong. Surprisingly, I thought the sport band was much more comfortable though and I won't be rushing to get the Millinese Loop.
I then played with some functioning watches that were tethered to iPads. I was able to sort of check out the taptic feedback, but since it wasn't on my wrist, I didn't get the full experience. The force touch worked exactly how I felt like it would and seemed very precise. The demo stands let you fully customize the watch faces and play around with almost all of the features. The analog faces tended to look better than the digital ones and the animated emoji, as others have said, were weird, and looked pretty lame.
The killer feature for me was the digital crown. It felt completely natural to use for scrolling, zooming, and opening apps and has the perfect amount of give when turning it.
EDIT: Also, to add, the Apple Store employee offered to let me try on more than two, but I'm sure this isn't the norm. This could be because he was embarrassed the models weren't working.
