My late 2006 iMac seems to have died.

When i press the on button it starts up normally with the sound and the apple symbol on the screen with the wheel starting to spin. then the computer just dies. i have tried to insert system disc but there is no significant change. i can hear it reading the disc but then it just dies all the same. also tried booting with an external hard drive but withoiut result.

any ideas? what could be the problem? i recon there is a hardware failure but where?

Hi, I have two suggestions.

  • Start up into safe mode (I think the key is shift)
  • Start up and run the Apple hardware test (hold D as it starts up)

Kind Regards

Thanks, but i have allready tried that and i also tried resetting the PRAM... Nothing...

Problem solved!

I gutted her open and ripped out the hard drive, replaced it, stitched her up again, couple of hail marys and pressed power. Lo and behold, as good as new. actually better since it's a bigger hard drive.

phew!

Thanks you guys writing and reading about this.
