I never thought that I'd actually make myself a profile on MySpace let alone actually feel the urge to ask what the proper MySpace etiquette is but here I sit bored out of my mind and stuck in the house while I recover for surgery. During the last dose of pain killers making a profile on MySpace sounded like a stellar idea. Now I'm kind of drawn into looking at other people's profiles. Thank goodness I really lack time when I am not recovering from surgery so I doubt this will go far. Anyway, here's my question (finally). Is there any sort of do's and don'ts to myspace? I found a few people who have interesting profiles and I wanted to comment but I guess in order to do that I have to add them as friends. Is that how it rolls? Do people just add others as friends just to strike up conversation?

I'd IM them if they were online but the MySpace IM thing seems to be windows only.

Thanks for reading my stupid ramble about some social networking site that I am probably too old to hang out around anyway!

I feel if you find a profile that you find interesting, I consider it fair game to friend request them (I mean it is a social networking site is it not?)...I'm not sure if you can or not but add a message to your request and say that you aren't "spamming" them, you simply find them interesting -- or just forget about that and randomly friend request them

--Personally I would try out the newly launched "Virb" social networking site.... lol sorry I just had to throw that opinion in

Good luck

I will check out Virb...never heard of it but I have a ton of time today!!!

DO:
not make a myspace

DONT:
make a myspace

easy as that :D

seriously, the reason i hate myspace is because of all the little pre-pubescent emo girls with millions of pics of themselves in various emo poses, moving background and crappy MCR etc. playing. So if you can make it so its not like that, you should be fine :)

Is there any sort of do's and don'ts to myspace?

Don't:
  • use an ultra complex/flashy background
  • use invisible text boxes with a font color that makes your page impossible to read when displayed over your background
  • put so many videos and images on your page that it takes 10 minutes to load the page on a 7Mb cable connection

Of course, there are many people who do these things, and if you visit their sites you'll find out why you shouldn't. ;)

By default, you can comment on anyone's page, or send a message to anyone without being their friend. However, everyone has the option to change their privacy settings and only allow their friends to message/comment them. Try leaving a comment, and if that doesn't work, try sending a message. Otherwise, you'll have to send them a friend request. It's always good to have friends, and you can always remove them from your friends list if you change your mind.

There are many different types of people on MySpace: people who try to add as many "friends" as possible, people who only wish to use MySpace to communicate with people they know IRL, and people who have some balance.

Of course, the best advice given above is not to make one at all. :D The only reason I have one is that it makes it easier for me to follow local rock bands.

Just make sure you don't attract any pedophile cats:

Yeah the whole page layout thing is much like those AOL websites that each user could make with 1000's of animated GIFs. I found 94 people who graduated the same year I did from my old high school. I only recognize like 6 of them, but it's been over 10 years (yikes). Who knows, it may be fun, but I don't care much for flashing the page out...I think from boredom I figured I'd connect with old buddies or make new buddies. It could be the drugs, there is always that.
