MySQL Workbench + XAMPP Problems

Hi Everyone,

I want to get into mysql and every time I have both programs running, MySQL workbench always fails.

MySQL fails and closes when I enter the System Profile - its also fails when I try to Test Connection. Anyone know the solution? I downloaded the exact versions my friend has and still no luck. At this point, I just need a combination that works. As previously stated, I'm new to this, so try to use terms I will understand.

I have OS X El Capitan, 10.11
XAMPP - 5.5.19-0
MySQL - 6.1.7
