Mystery sensor on iPad 2?

I was watching the iPad 2 video on apple.com when i noticed a sensor above the camera. I think its a proximity sensor, but the smart cover relies on magnets. I don't know why apple would include a proximity sensor. What do you think it is?

Its an ambient light sensor, for like auto-brightness.

Nope, the microphone is on the top edge of the iPad.
