So I've been had "Earth View" set as my desktop background for quite a while and just now noticed this very interesting patch of smoke/ash almost dead center on the the earth. As a geologist, I'm with kicking myself for not having spotted this earlier and also wanting to know more about this image. Clearly this is not normal clouds but rather (as far as I can figure) either 1) smoke from a huge fire (a la Australian mega fires from a few years ago) or 2) ash from a volcanic eruption in Micronesia or Indonesia (with ash drifting away).

Does anyone know anything about where Apple sourced this image? When it was taken? Etc. Maybe they did not notice this feature when they decided to use this, or maybe it is some sort of statement about global warming if it is indeed smoke from the Australian forest fires.

Thx

PS - I recall this image was included in Big Sur, let me know if it was released with some other release.
