Hi all,

We have some old laptops, with old style HD drives. There are spinning magnetic discs no?

We are buying a Ipad with a Magic keyboard. Apparently the ipad is held in place by uber strong magnets on the magic keyboard.

Sooooo.....

1. Storage
We currently are pilling up all the laptops, including work laptops, on top of each other etc.
I take it, it s a bad idea to put the magic keyboard on top of this pile of old laptops?

2. Travelling

I take it, it s a bad idea to just slip the magic keyboard into the satchel, next to anything that has magnetic media on it?
Does this include the wallet, with magnetic stips on credit cards, and old style door pass cards etc.?

3. Other items to keep magnets away from?
...er... what else now-a-days would have magnetic media on them?

Hope you can advise!

Regards
MArtin

Strong electronica magnets were used to erase old spinning disks! Have yet (I’m retired so been out for a couple of years)! Old friends say it can erase NVRAM and metal externals!

I have been using a Zagg rugged iPad keyboard case that attaches with strong magnets for the past two years. No problems. Many years ago, my wife kept having problems with magnetic transit cards and had to get replacements a couple times. She finally realized that it was her new purse with a magnetic clasp! ;)

I also remember when Garmin introduced a magnetic mount for their premium automotive GPS back in 2013. A lot of people had problems with these erasing their credit cards and magnetic hotel key cards.

I wouldn't put my credit card against any kind of magnet but I think the term strong magnet is relative. I'm sure you would be fine with an iPad and laptop in the same case. Now keep the neodymium magnets out of your laptop bag :p
