Do a search in here - this has been covered many times. There is a good walk-through on accomplishing this network easily without a Router. (which it appears you're not using)

lol i feel like such a n00b atm. ive been trying to connect to my mbp from my (xp) imac. i turned on SMB sharing on the mbp but it just wont connect.
i know that i was doing everything right, but just something just wasnt working and am really not in the mood to go looking so i just gave up lol.
