Apples got it covered for a couple years.

This year: The new iPad
Next year: The newer iPad
Following year: The newest iPad
Year after that: The newerest iPad?

:p :D

What would you name it?

The new iPad.

Think dropping the numbers game is a good idea actually. In 3-4 months this'll simply be the iPad, while it will become iPad (3rd gen) when the 4 arrives. You don't see MacBook air 5's do you, only 5,1 for example in the about screen.

Probably do the same with the iPhone in October.

iPad will be the name for the next 3 - 5 updates. The MacbookPro hasn't changed it's name for each release, so why should other devices? The next iPhone coming out won't be an iPhone 5, it name will be the new "iPhone".

As far as Apple's concerned, it'll be either "iPad (fourth generation)" or "iPad (early 2013)" etc. Just like all their other products.

Yup. I think they are trying to cut out the long numbers before it gets too crazy. It will just be the iPad from now on. This one is the 3rd generation one. I would bet on the next iPhone being called the iPhone as well.
