So I have created a geofence automation for lighting, set to activate between sunset and sunrise. I don't use these lights during the day. But now I want an automation event, also geofenced, for my ecobee4 thermostat. This I want to operate from 6am thru 10pm. So I create another pair "When last person leaves" and "When first person arrives" to set the temp to away, and then at home.

But why wouldn't Apple permit the naming of the event in the automation list? Its confusing to say the least.

As far as I know all you can really do here for now is give the scene a helpful name. It'd definitely be nice to have more flexibility here.

The automation can be named. It just can't be done or shown in the Home app, which I think is weird and dumb. I can name an automation on a 3rd party app, and another 3rd party app can see the name just fine. All of this is ignored on the Home app.

Yes that's what I mean.
