naming external drives, hard drives, thum drives for best compatability

I like to give my externals breif names to describe what they are for

Is there any particular way this has to be done? I use my externals with both mac & PC so I need them compatible & readable.

Does it matter if I just capitalize names? or do they have to be in all caps?
 
It depends on the format of the HDDs, if they use FAT32 (MS-DOS file system), then you will be limited to eight capital letters anyway.

Finder > select external HDD >> GET INFO >>> Format
