Hi guys. New member here : )

So I've been looking into Phillips hue lights, when I came across the new thread nano leaf lights. Better connection, no bridge and much cheaper. They seem like a steal.

So now a question about thread technology. Say I have nanoleaf bulbs I then need a thread enabled hub - a mini. Would the request to change colour etc have to be placed on the mini? Or could it be placed on any of my regular homepods and the mini would then carry out the command from the networked devices.

What do you think, I know this is quite new tech, so guesses are fine too 😁👍

Cheers
Dan

My guess is you won’t have to do it using the minis, you should be able to set triggers on an iPhone, look for videos on YouTube where people test thread...it seems like you need to have a mini so far, if they decide not to include the tech in the original HomePod with a firmware update, as most manufacturers are doing atm, which is a bummer, but Apple is Apple and $ is $

You can control the thread devices that are in HomeKit from anywhere with any of your logged in devices.

I can be in my car and ask Siri via CarPlay to turn on or off any of my lights at my house.

Money has nothing to do with it. You neeed hardware in the device to make it work, the full size HomePod does not have the hardware, so it physically is incapable of doing it. Firmware update would do nothing. About the same chance as a software update adding cellular to your laptop.

To the OP
You've way overthought something, thread is just a network connection. You don't actually see it, or configure it in anyway.
it's an alternative way to get on the network, once it's on the network, anything can control it.

Mind explaining what hardware you are referring to?

the radio hardware to actually speak thread

it's not wifi, it's not bluetooth
those are the only 2 radios the full-size has.

just like your laptop can't join a cell network because it doesn't have cell hardware
a full size HomePod can't do thread because it doesn't have a thread radio.
