Better hurry Nappy....tomorrow I'm going to be cashing in 5 more free songs from Pepsi. Hell Apple will probably do 5 million songs in a half month.

that would be 5 million songs in how many months?
Isnt that Like an average of 1 million songs a month? Soo in a couple of years Napster might reach 30 Million songs.......mmmmm food for thought.;)

Free iTunes publicity

Notice how Apple always gets free publicity--generally very GOOD press--whenever a competitor gets a news article? That's a great position for Apple to be in!

Napster sends out a press release, and this gets tacked on: "it remains far behind Apple Computer's iTunes, which serves both PCs and Macintosh computers." :)

Late Oct. to late Feb. is 5 million songs in 4 months.

What is Apple up to now? 30 million?

Well, according to this press release from Apple they were at 30 million downloads on January 6th! So add to that nearly two more months, the Pepsi promotion, and the AOL deal (okay so that happened in December). True...Apple has had more time to amass that 30 million but between April 28th and July 16th Apple sold over 6.5 million songs. And as Steve would say, "And that's just on the Mac!"

I wonder if that 5 million number includes streams? Didn't they pull some funny numbers in one of their earlier news releases by including downloads with streams? I still think they won't be around in a year's time. :)

i agree with <above poster> in stating that napster will not make it as the "alternative to itunes"... but at this point, there are no contendors.

Easily i'd say - from the figures given at the MW keynote they were up to just under 1.9 million for a single week. So over 2.5 million a week wouldn't be be an unreasonable estimate when you add in the Pepsi figures.

I certainly don't doubt that. But I can't see the 100 mil. target being hit.

Even if we assume 40m by end of Feb, that still only leaves about 60 days to get another 60 million. And if only 30% yellow caps will be utilised (nb: that figure was drawn from another thread, so no real substantive proof) that would mean regular users are going to have to up their ante to 500 thou downloads a day.

Sure, failing to meet a target that was on the tad ambitios side will have no real impact on the fabric of mankind, but it still makes me sad:(

oOoo THIS IS SO FUNNY this is for the united states right wait till the rest of the world opens up :D

100M goal

I believe Steve (or somebody at Apple) said the 100 million goal was possible BECASE of the Pepsi deal. That does change things vs. past trends.

And the AOL deal is even huger in my mind--mostly long-term but it's still a new factor--and that seems to be all but forgotten in recent discussion.

HP could affect things--but they won't have iTunes pre-installed within the first year of iTunes, will they?

I think Apple could easily miss the 100M goal--but don't be too sure yet!

Well Napster is dead.

I hate people calling 'Lame Napster' or Napster 2.0 Just regular Napster.

Arg...

Anyway iTMS isn't gonna reach 100 mill anytime soon, really guys.

40 mill?
Sure.
100 mill?
naah
