NASA is now accepting applications for future Astronauts to go the the ISS and beyond to Mars.
HOUSTON -- Do you dream of flying in space? Now is your chance. NASA is accepting applications for the agency's next class for the Astronaut Candidate Program.

Starting today, qualified individuals can submit their applications through the federal government's USAJobs.gov website. Those selected will be among the first to pioneer a new generation of commercial launch vehicles and travel aboard a new heavy-lift rocket to distant destinations in deep space.

"For 50 years, American astronauts have led the exploration of our solar system," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "Today we are getting a glimpse of why that will remain true for the next half-century. Make no mistake about it, human space flight is alive and well at NASA."

Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering, science or math and three years of relevant professional experience. Successful applicants frequently have significant qualifications in engineering or science; or extensive experience flying high-performance jet aircraft. Educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade with these minimimum degree requirements also are encouraged to apply.

NASA will accept applications through January 27, 2012. After applicant interviews and evaluations, the agency expects to announce the final selections in 2013. Training will begin that summer.

My wife used to work for NASA - she encouraged me to apply a couple of days ago. Strangely, at least as far as their stated requirements - I'm pretty well qualified. Of course, so are the thousands of others applying as well! But it's like the lottery, you can't win it unless you're in it, so I threw an application in.

Very cool. Good luck.

At least I can still call you fly-boy if you get it. :D

That is awesome, maybe you will be the first person to step foot on Mars.

The very best of luck with it. I'm impressed, and well done for applying; when I was a small kid (watching the original moon landings absolutely enthralled and entranced) I used to dream of being able to do something like that.

^^^ thanks guys! I don't hold out much hope for getting the call, though. :)
They announce the class in 2013 but do they say how long training is before first blasting off? Of course they still need to get the new rockets tested. First unmanned test flight in 2014.

From the application itself, the only relevant part I could find is:

Selected applicants will be designated Astronaut Candidates and will undergo a training and evaluation period lasting approximately 2 years.

Astronaut Candidates will be required to pass a swimming test during the first month of training.

Selection into the Astronaut Candidate Program does not guarantee selection as an astronaut. Final selection as an astronaut will depend upon satisfactory completion of the training and evaluation period.

So it looks like a minimum of 2 years as a Candidate, but I'm sure there's plenty of additional training once you're through.

I would imagine the core group that they are looking for will be trained for the orion project that is still many years out. I don't think many of the new hires will be getting rides from the russians and will be focused instead on NASA's future projects. The current astronauts will be making ISS trips.
It depends when Russia or China can get us there :(.
NASA is hiring for long term not the near 5 year ISS missions. By the time these new recruits are ready to fly we will have our new rockets ready to go.

Keep reaching for the stars, Snoops, but you think airline food is bad? ;)

Haha - I get around having to eat airline food by packing my own lunch. Can't imagine NASA would let me do that, though!

It's nice to dream, but my app is one of thousands, I'm sure. I meet the qualifications, but I'll bet for every one of me there's a huge number of people much, much more qualified.
