Nasty iOS 8 battery drain

So yeah... the battery drain is intense on beta 5. Leaving my iPhone on with the screen off nearly kills my phone, took a 2 hour nap and it went from 86% to 51% with only 1 text missed.

What should I do? i have the battery drainers off like fetch/push mail, background app refresh, brightness, and location services.

Look at the battery usage stats in settings. You may have low signal and or a app hanging due to not being optimized.

1) Delete all non stock apps and reload one at a time and note battery usage.

2) Wipe phone and reinstall OS and reload apps one at a time.

Photos - 32%
Safari - 26%
Home & Lock Screen - 10%
which is weird as I've been on wi-fi and the phone has been out of use for most of the past 24 hours, no way i spent 26% battery on safari watching 2 3 minute videos

It means your connection to the cell phone tower was weak. When that happens, the phone has to use more power to stay connected.

iCloud photo library syncing?

Battery Horrible!

My battery is horrible in iphone 5. When I use safari the cellphone gets hot! The report says 35%. For sure I don't use safari a lot a time!

This IOS 8 GM sucks

Mine has been awful as well. I have to keep it plugged in all day at work just to listen to podcasts. I quit out of every other app and it still drains super fast. I tried restoring a few different times but it's still really bad.

Same issue for me on my 5s. I only get about 3 hours of "usage" before it dies (and 6-7 hours of standby if you wanna count that). That's ridiculous.

I went from beta 5 → GM with my backup carried along but now I'm trying as a new restore. Kind of hoping that'll fix it since Apple really can't ship something out with this bad of a battery drain for all people to experience.

→ I also had my iPhone's battery checked via iOS diagnostics through Apple's web support and it showed up as passing the health test.

Anyone else?

How do you do that!?

How did you do that? I took my phone in the the Apple store and they were unable to run the diagnostics software with my phone because i had iOS 8. I have to downgrade to iOS 7 and take it back tomorrow, but if I can save myself the trip and run it from home, that would be better.

When you first upgrade to iOS 8, if you have a lot of photos in your camera roll or synced to your phone, it will spend a good amount of time internally reorganizing the photos. This uses a lot of CPU (I think it's creating thumbnails) and will cause the phone to run a little slow and hot for a bit.

It took about 45 minutes for this process to finish on my iPhone 5.

If you open photos and scroll down to the bottom of the Albums tab, it may say "Syncing..." or "Recovering..." or similar.

I'm almost certain this is your issue because of the fact that it says Photos is your number one battery user.

I for one am getting good battery life on the GM. Usage is normal as always so not sure others are experiencing issues…

Same here.

Yes, it only works on iOS 7 (had to downgrade for that). You do it over Apple's online support or in store.
