Native Calendar app (widget??)

Why can't developers make app in a similar manner to the native calendar app so the icon image can change daily, monthly, or even hourly?
It isn't a widget but it's similar to one? Or doesn't Apple that kind of stuff?
It'll be pretty cool if Apple allows third-party developers to do this.

I would love to implement that for my calendar app, but so far I haven't found any Apple approved API to do it. Maybe some day ...
