So I played around with the videos on the iPhone a bit and I have to say:
filmic pro is just a terribly ****** app, how can any professional consider such trash, after being used to proper cine cameras...
They didn’t fix anything either in the 2 years I haven’t used it. Still crashes, hangs up, ...
And on top of that, I always thought the bad performance was due to my SE, but guess what... it’s still slow, sluggish and non reactive.
terrible software... I doubt any professional would use that for anything other than getting media attention
now that I’m over with my rant, I would like to mention though, that I compared the results to the footage out of the native app and the results to me were quite surprising:
The dynamic range is almost as good as in filmic pro log2, most likely due to some smart hdr wizardry. The image is way less grainy, I assume there is also some post processing involved. If you expose correctly id say some of the results are way better than from filmic pro. But of course, the lower Bitrate will make you stuck with the more contrasts look. Assuming one doesn’t want to apply heavy grading, the footage should hold up.
With that being said, there’s obviously some amount of control you give up. AE/AF is a good way to control exposure, but sometimes you want to guide the smartHDR algorithm to expose for one certain part of a scene while focusing on another. This is not possible at the moment, please Apple, give us better focus controls.
Obviously there is no way to fix white balance, which in rare cases might become annoying.
There’s also a lack of zebras, but i can live without that.
but all in all, for the kind of movie shooting I would do on an iPhone (run and gun / short narratives for YouTube) I would say the native camera app finally became good enough with the iPhone 11 to skip the ux nightmares from the other apps.
What are your thoughts?
