I am currently utilizing the native DisplayPort output of my iPhone 15 Pro to connect to an external display, specifically the LG 27UL500-W 27-inch 4k display. This setup works seamlessly with both a native USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable (without any conversions) and various USB-C-to-HDMI cables (active cables with built-in converter ICs) and adapters.

Given that there is no signal conversion involved, my preference is to use the native USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable from CableMatters. However, I have encountered an issue where the colors, particularly the blacks, appear somewhat washed out. I suspect that the iPhone may be outputting a limited color range (a possibility I didn't even consider with DisplayPort) or possibly using YCbCr instead of RGB (an issue known to affect Apple Silicon laptops for an extended period of time). Regrettably, the LG display lacks any corresponding settings or information screens that would display the color range.

The active USB-C-to-HDMI-cables and converters actually display deeper blacks and less washed out colors, compared to native DisplayPort. I read somewhere that you can somehow get better DisplayPort color range output by momentarily triggering AirPlay (can't test this, since I don't own any AirPlay compatible recievers)?

Can anyone else replicate this issue? Have you observed limited color ranges when using the native DisplayPort output?

You can’t compare the colors on a monitor to the super saturated candy cane colors on an iPhone. The iPhone colors are obscene. Way too saturated.
