Native movie format for editing in Imovie 08

I have a load of varied different movies that I want to edit in Imovie 08 and wondered which format I should convert them too with MPEG Streamclip?

I have old vcd - Mpeg 1 DAT files and some MPEG2 stream files and wanted to convert to the native editing format so I wasn't converting over and over again and thus losing quality?

There are a number of different Apple formats within MPEG Streamclip so its slightly confusing (like Apple motion jpeg1 and 2 and then ApplePRODVC etc).

One other thing that just crossed my mind is the end format I intend to output too which will be MPEG2 DVD is now natively supported in Imovie 08 (I think) so maybe its best I convert them to MPEG2 instead?

iMovie uses Apple Intermediate Codec by default if I remember correctly.
